About Oscar Debieux - 4th Degree Black Belt

Oscar began his Tae Kwon Do journey in March 2006 with the Wellington and Taunton clubs under the tutelage of Master Alec Hay, 7th Dan

In 2017, he attended The University of Edinburgh and began training with Master Angus Budge, 6th Dan.

Whilst at university, Oscar composed his dissertation - "Postwar Korean National Identity in the Genesis of Tae Kwon Do."

At the age of 27, he has 19 years of experience in Tae Kwon Do and martial arts.

Competitive Career

Winning honours at both regional and national level, Oscar represented the TAGB Scotland national squad in 2021 at the Arnold Schwarzenegger Sports Festival in Birmingham.

Teaching

Oscar discovered his passion for teaching at his local club after school. He carried this through his time at university, often assisting Master Budge with his lessons.

In 2018, Oscar was hired by Camp Hilltop as part of the Camp America scheme. During his time, he taught hundreds of students Tae Kwon Do and Kickboxing.

The following summer he spent two weeks at the Wellington International School in Shanghai, China - he was able to impart his Tae Kwon Do expertise to the children there too.

Since moving to Galashiels, Oscar has opened his first club - Galashiels Tae Kwon Do - and still trains regularly in Edinburgh.

Why I Started Tae Kwon Do, and Why I Stayed

"I started Tae Kwon Do because I was brought up in a rural area and I was a very shy child. I found meeting people hard and struggled to concentrate."

"Tae Kwon Do brought me out of my shell, increased my confidence in meeting people and taught me how to make lasting connections with others."
